United Way 2009 Campaign Soared Over Goal!
United Way of Mid Coast Maine’s
fall Campaign to help local people went far over goal, raising a total of $2,009,923. The goal was $1,900,000.
“Thank you!” said Campaign Co-Chair Michael Jones at the Campaign Finale, noting that Mid Coasts’ residents “extraordinary generosity means a lot of people’s lives will be changed for the better over the coming year.”
“What a wonderful community we have,” said Co-Chair Dodie Jones. “What generous people. This is a great testament to people’s willingness to look beyond themselves, and LIVE UNITED.”

Employees at many workplaces contributed record amounts this year. Division Awards went to L.L. Bean Brunswick Manufacturing (Commerce and Industry Division), Bowdoin College (Education Division), Wright Pierce (Finance & Professional Firms Division), Lincoln County Healthcare (Health Division), People Plus Center (Public Service Division) and the Hardings Plant (Bath Iron Works Division).
A highlight of the campaign was the Bath Iron Works campaign, which raised a record $822,000. Bath Iron Works received one of United Way’s Outstanding Organizational Support Awards, as did L.L. Bean and Downeast Energy.
The overall Campaign Excellence Award was presented to the employees of Bath Savings Institution and Bath Savings Trust. The Co-Chairs said, “Bath Savings already had an award-winning campaign, and employees increased giving this year by 9.3% to over $24,000! And what is perhaps most remarkable, out of 141 employees, 136 are donors – 96.5% participation!”
The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to George Reichert of the Times Record. “What stands out about George is his passion – his passion for United Way and for helping each other in our community,” Michael and Dodie Jones said in presenting the award.
The campaign results were announced to an excited crowd at United Way’s Campaign Finale. Michael and Dodie Jones thanked all donors who contributed at any level, people who became donors for the first time, and people who became leadership givers of $500 or more.
They thanked the lead donors and members of United Way’s Board, Cabinet, and staff who pledged an additional $30,000 as a Challenge Match for new and increased Leadership Giving. “This definitely reinforced our message that in these challenging times, some of us would need to give more,” said Michael, and “donors liked the match and increased their leadership giving.”
The campaign encouraged people to LIVE UNITED, or think of others beyond themselves, and to celebrate Local Heroes – people who give, advocate, or volunteer on behalf of others in need. “Every donor, every volunteer, is a Super Hero in our books!” said Dodie Jones.
